I have been hard at work trying to meet my first goal for 2009. I actually have been working so hard that I haven't sat down to write out my goals for this year. I have them in my head and what you see below is one of them. Stay tuned for the end of the month.

It is the last day of 2008. This past year I shot some amazing weddings and traveled all over our great country. I feel like I have done my best work this past year and look forward to applying some of the things I have learned to 2009. There are so many images I have shot this past year that I am proud to call my own. It was hard for me to narrow down my selection to just 10 images, so I decided to do two separate categories. First are my 10 favorite wedding images from the past year. Followed by 10 favorites from other times I took out my camera. The smaller images are from before I redesigned my blog.

Last week I finally received my Canon 5D Mark II after waiting what felt like an eternity. Canon announced the new 5D back on September 17th. I pre-ordered the body that same day hoping to get it as soon as they started shipping. Canon said they would start shipping by the end on November. I paid for next day shipping hoping I would get it last month in time for Alex & Colleen's wedding so I could test it out.

A couple cool things about the Canon 5D Mark II that really made me want to get it are the 21.1 mega pixel sensor, the ability to shoot at higher ISOs for lower light situations, and the rocking 1080P HD video it can record.

This past weekend I brought the camera with me to our small group Christmas party. I didn't shoot as much as I wanted, I was having fun playing with Gideon and hanging out with my friends. Here are some shots, mostly of Gideon testing out ISOs 800-3200.

Alex & Colleen - 11/28/08

I am back up and running after a two week trip to the east coast and a week fighting a nasty cold/flu bug. Last month Victoria, Gideon, and I made a trip back to MD, OH, and PA to visit family and friends, celebrate Thanksgiving, and attend a family wedding.

I have known Alex, the groom, since he was born. He is my youngest cousin and it has been fun to see him grow up to the man he is today. I am so happy he has found someone as wonderful as Colleen to go through life with. I wish them many happy years together. I was not the official photographer for Alex & Colleen's wedding but I was able to grab some shots throughout the day while enjoying the wedding and reception with Victoria and Gideon. Here are a few of my favorites from the day.

Two weekends ago I photographed Rose and Fernie's wedding at Quiet Cannon in Montebello, CA. The ceremony took place in the courtyard and the reception was just up the stairs in one of the banquet rooms. There are so many great images from their wedding day. Here are only a select few.

I am a little behind in my posts with the change in routine that came with the arrival of Gideon. The good news is that I think we have new routine down and I can get back to posting.

Back in September, I tagged along with my good friend, Jeremy Yates, to photograph Sarah and John's wedding at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, CA. I had a blast shooting with Jeremy and hope that we can do it again many times in the future. Make sure you go check out Jeremy's post from Sarah and John's wedding to see addition photos. Yesterday I spent some time photographing Gideon. I used some black velvet fabric and window light for the setup. The shoot went pretty well and Gideon cooperated most of the time. Here are a few of my favorites.

PHILLIES WIN!!!!

The Phillies finally won the World Series. Gideon was too tired to stay up and watch the game, not like he would remember it at 5 days old. I was only 3 years old when the Phillies won the their first Championship in 1980. There were so many times this year when I wanted to give up hope on the Phillies. It seemed like every time I wore a Phillies shirt they would loose. I noticed the trend and stopped wearing my shirts and they started winning. During the playoffs things were different. The only losses they had were when I didn't wear a Phillies shirt, except for game 2 of the World Series where the umps blew two key calls. The past couple of years have been great to be a Phillies fan. They have been so close and made things interesting. I hope they can keep it up for a few more years and maybe even pick up another Championship. Here is shot with our Canon SD750 of Gideon and I watching the World Series.

Yesterday, 10/24/2008, at 9:42am I became a father. Gideon was born weighing 9lb 1oz and was 22.25 inches long.

The Blessing - a background
It is crazy how much can happen in a year. Last year on the 24th of October I packed up the Honda Element with my dad and drove from MD across the country to move to CA and take a leap of faith. On that same day Victoria was working with the movers to get our house packed so she could soon follow, by plane, a few days later with my mom. Victoria and I would have never guessed that we would have a child 1 year later. Starting a family was something we had hoped and dreamed about for several years but had no luck. We figured we would move to CA and get settled and then look into adoption one day. The exact day we felt settled in CA God started knitting Gideon together so he could be our child.

I am pretty sure this is the way things had to happen. If we had been blessed with a child back in MD I don't think I could have taken this leap to follow the dreams God has for me and my family. Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. That is a verse that Victoria and I have recited to each other so many times over the past year and half as we made our leap. It was our hope and comfort and remains to this day.

Gideon's birth
On Thursday, 10/23/2008, we had what was our last pre-baby midwife appointment. Victoria was already 4 days past her due date and had to make an appointment with the back-up OB for the following Monday to check on Gideon's health. Our Midwife, Mary Lou O'Brien, examined Victoria during her appointment and laughed saying you should be in labor right now. After we left, Mary Lou called her assistant, Elena Vogel, and warned her to be ready for a middle of the night call. After the appointment we headed over to Costco and then home to relax for the rest of the night. Later that night we went for walk around our apartment complex and then headed off to bed.

Around 3:30am Friday 10/24/2008 morning Victoria woke me up jumping out of bed saying her water broke. About 10 minutes later she started contractions. They started at 3-5 minutes apart and got increasingly more intense. After about 30 minutes I called Mary Lou and she headed on over along with her assistant. I also called our friend Lory who hosted our baby shower so she could be present at the birth. By 5:30am everyone was there that needed to be. The labor and delivery went smooth and was at home as planned. During labor I had a hard time holding back the tears as I read Psalm 139, and Lory read other passages, to help Victoria relax. I am so proud of Victoria and how she was determined to labor and deliver completely drug free and naturally and she accomplished that. It is crazy to think that 6 hours after Victoria woke me, we had Gideon.

Here are some images that I took when I had a chance. Make sure you read the end of this post for one last important paragraph.

Moments after Gideon's birth I grabbed my Canon 5D with 24mm 1.4L attached from the nightstand and captured this. You can see in the right part of the frame the blanket just about to cover Gideon up to keep him warm.

Lory took this with my 5D while I spent some time with Victoria and Gideon. It is our first family picture.

Victoria did such an amazing job. I am so proud of her!

What I am thankful for
There are so many people that made this home birth experience so wonderful. Here is a short list.

1. Sherry Rumsey of Birthing Baby for encouraging us to give birth at home. It is something that Victoria always wanted to do but I know Sherry helped make it happen. Sherry is a midwife-in-training, doula, and was our Bradley Method class instructor. We highly recommend Sherry and her services.
2. Mary Lou O'Brien for being so amazing and wonderful as our midwife. We highly recommend Mary Lou and her 20 years of experience. I know we will be using her again.
3. Elena Vogel assisted Mary Lou with the birth. She was the first one to arrive that morning. Victoria and I are so thankful for her and all her knowledge and help.
4. Lory Ishii for everything she did to help. Lory made the most wonderful breakfast. I wish I would have gotten some pictures but I was a little preoccupied with spending time with Gideon and Victoria. Lory also ran out to pick up a few things once Mary Lou and Elena left. Lory even came back later that night to bring us dinner. We are also thankful for Lory's husband George and how he allowed his wife to come and serve us. George and Lory also prayed for us when we woke them at 4:00 in the morning. We are so thankful.
5. Everyone that called and sent messages on email and Facebook congratulating us. We are so thankful for all the blessings. We are also thankful for everyone offering to help in any way they can.

Life is beautiful and I think times like a birth or marriage bring out some of the best in human nature. We are thankful and full of joy!

Sienna Bella Ruth Sullivan

Last week I photographed Aaron and Corrie Sullivan's 2.5 week old little girl. If you remember from one of my previous posts, Corrie was due 4 weeks before my wife, Victoria. Corrie's mom made the trip from Ireland to lend a hand to Aaron and Corrie during Sienna's first few weeks. I had such a great time and can't wait for my little boy to come so he can meet Sienna. Corrie is an awesome designer, make sure you check out her Etsy store.

On the last Saturday on September I had a blast photographing Heidi and Jeremy's wedding in Newport Beach, CA. They ceremony took place at the Community Church of Corona del Mar and the reception was aboard the Ambassador yacht of Pacific Avalon Yacht Charters. Our Baby Shower

Earlier today several of our friends threw Victoria and I a baby shower for our baby boy who is due in 3 more weeks. It was so much fun to get together with some great friends and family to share in our upcoming birth. Our friends George and Lory opened their home to host the party. As if opening their home wasn't enough they also provided some great grub for all of us to chow down on. Jessica provided some awesome decorations and helped with the planning. My sister, Shea, planned all the games and coordinated the event. We are so blessed to have so many amazing people in our lives. Here are some images I snapped throughout the day while I was having fun.

Last month I made a second trip to Seattle to photograph Kevin and Sunny's wedding. It ended up being a very hot day in Seattle with the temperature topping 90 degrees. Here are some of my favorites from Sunny and Kevin's special day.

The past couple of weeks have been crazy. I am just about to head back to Vegas for the second time this week to attend Photoshop World. Victoria and I were there last weekend for a friend's wedding. My best friend, Mike, flew into Vegas to spend the week with us in Vegas and LA. Stay tuned for a blog post about some of our adventures. It was my 31st birthday this past Sunday, the 31st. Victoria, Mike, and I enjoyed a nice meal at Carrabba's in Vegas. When we lived in Maryland we had one within walking distance. Now the closest one is in Vegas. For my birthday I rented a Canon 45mm tilt-shift lens for fun. Here are a few images I shot while playing around with the lens in Vegas and back at our apartment.

I think we'd better start getting ready for this baby. The end is coming soon. Victoria at 33 weeks.

Last Wednesday, the 13th, I had the chance to photograph the Association of Bridal Consultants of Los Angeles Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. This mansion is a historic building that has been used in many of my favorite films including Ghostbusters, Spiderman, Spiderman 2, The Prestige, X-Men, The Big Lewbowski, and many others.

Nic & LaCrista - 8/09/08

Last Saturday I had a blast photographing Nic & Lacrista's wedding day in Hollywood. Peter Garr joined me as a second shooter for the day. We had a blast working together and captured some amazing images for Nic & LaCrista. Nic & Lacrista have amazing family and friends. When we were trying to do some very large group shots everyone knew exactly where to stand so I could see everyone. It made my job easier and made it possible for us to get out of the church quickly after the ceremony. Everyone was such a joy to be around. Days like this are the reason I love wedding photography. Here are some of my favorite images from the day.

The day started off at the Hollywood United Methodist Church and ended at the Ebell Club of Los Angeles. The church was amazing inside and out. There was no AC so it did get a bit toasty but everyone survived.

Even though I grew up very close to Baltimore I have always been a Philadelphia Phillies fan. The first baseball game I ever went to was a Phillies game. The Phillies is something my dad and I can always talk about.

Earlier tonight Victoria and I went to Dodger Stadium to see the Phillies play. They ended up giving up the lead in the 8th inning and loosing the game in the 9th. We had some pretty nice seats. We were in the left field bleachers in the front row. Sadly no homers were hit our way. The signage at Dodger stadium leaves alot to be desired. It was like playing Where's Waldo when trying to find out the section numbers. They were not at the bottom of the stands like most ballparks. So we walked up several times looking for our seats getting booed in the process. There were other Phillies fans at the game that received the same welcome as us. At least when you did run into someone wearing red they were very nice and said hello. Here is the view from our seats with the Canon SD750.

I was hoping to go down to San Diego this weekend to catch a Phillies game there but I have another wedding in Seattle. So I guess we won't get to see the Phillies play again out here until next year. Here is us wearing red surrounded by Dodger fans.

Free to Succeed

Last night I went to see David Jay present at the LAX Sheraton for his Free to Succeed tour. Jasmine Star joined DJ as a guest presenter. Jasmine Star has only been photographing weddings for two years but her trajectory in the industry is something that has everyone in awe. The best part about her story is, Jasmine has achieved all this success by just being herself. I can see why she has no trouble booking brides with her personality. I am so excited to see what the future holds for Jasmine.

It was also good to see David Jay again. I am amazed by how he has been the brain behind several pieces of software for photographers all while shooting weddings. His newest creation Show-it Sites is groundbreaking. It allows you to quickly and easily build custom flash websites. Show-it Sites is built on Adobe Air and I am sure the executives at Adobe are very impressed with what DJ and his team have dreamed up. They must be, since they sponsored part of the tour.

I took away several valuable pieces on information that will help me better develop my brand. I also got to hang out with Becker, Jack Rantana, Christopher Wren, Brian Khang, and several other wedding photographers in the OC/LA region. I had a blast and hope to see some of my friends again soon. I have to give a big shout out to Becker for treating several of us to a late dinner at In-n-Out after the workshop.

Marty & Nancy - 8/2/08

Last weekend I took a flight up the coast to Seattle so I could photograph Marty and Nancy's wedding. The ceremony and reception took place at Marty and Nancy's lakefront home in Lake Tapps, WA. All of the guests were either family or very close friends which made for a very intimate and relaxed evening. The best part was everyone made me feel welcomed like I was an old friend. I am so happy I could capture Marty and Nancy's special day. Here are some of my favorite images from their wedding.

My First Earthquake

WOW!! I just experienced my first earthquake. It was pretty crazy. All of the sudden I felt this slight movement. I thought it was a big truck going by but the shaking got bigger and kept going. I could hear the wine glasses rattling downstairs. Nothing fell off shelves or broke. Check out the link for details about the earthquake. It was a 5.4 about 35 miles from where I live.

This past Friday I photographed Kevin & Amanda's wedding in Orange County. The weather was beautiful and I had no trouble finding amazing light no matter where I was shooting. Denise Woyski joined me as a second shooter for the day. We had a great time working together and inspired each other to create some amazing images of Kevin and Amanda's special day. Here are some of my favorites from the wedding day.

The day started of with me arriving in Newport Beach to capture Amanda and the girls getting ready.

Next we headed off the the Chapman Chapel in Orange, CA for the ceremony. Here are some portraits from just before the ceremony of Amanda, the girls, and Kevin.

Amanda's nephews served as ring bearers. Quinn loved the camera and always had a great smile whenever one was pointed at him.

The reception took place at relative's house in Santa Ana. The expansive backyard provided plenty of room for everyone to relax and enjoy the evening. The light for the first dance was absolutely amazing.

This past weekend Victoria and I reached 8 months of living in Los Angeles. Before we moved across country we constantly reminded each other of the verse Jeremiah 29:11 to ease our fears of the unknown. Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Since we have gotten to Los Angeles we have seen how God can really give you more than you can ask or imagine. We had no idea we be so blessed in such a short time.

One of the biggest blessings has been an amazing group of friends. Earlier tonight we had a chance to hang out with many of our friends and celebrate Heewon's birthday. Here are a few of my favorite photos from tonight.

Hotel Bel Air

This past Monday I had the chance to photograph an event at Hotel Bel Air for Moet Hennessy. I am very thankful for the amazing photographer, Claire Barrett, for sending me this referral. I can't thank her enough and hope to return the favor one day. I had a chance to work with Jeff Brown and his amazing team at Brown Hot Events. Jeff and his team pulled off an amazing event and made me feel so welcome and part of their team.

Here are some of the details from the day.

I did get the chance to have lunch at the restaurant at Hotel Bel Air thanks to Jeff. I didn't see any celebrities but I am kind of glad. I was carrying around my Canon 5D with my 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens attached and I was a little afraid that if I did see someone famous they would think I was a paparazzi. I had visions of being tackled by their posse before I could even say hello and how much I love their work. Taking their picture would be the last thing on my mind.

Augusto & Sandra - 6/7/08

On Saturday night I had the pleasure of photographing Augusto and Sandra's wedding at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum. The ceremony and reception were beautiful. The ceremony took place in the North American Mammal Hall and the reception was in the African Mammal Hall. I am so glad I could be there to capture their special day. I rented a Canon 24mm F/1.4L lens for the night. After some of the images I got with this lens I was sad when I had to return it. It will definitely be the next lens I purchase.

Last Friday I was in Bensalem, PA to shoot Matt & Gretchen's wedding. You may remember their engagement session that I posted about on my blog back in March. Matt and I used to work together at Lockheed Martin. A little after he took position in another office with Lockheed, he sent me an email telling me he was going to propose and wanted me to be their wedding photographer. It feels like it was so long ago when I got that email. Even after moving across the country this past fall they still wanted me as their photographer. I am so thankful that they brought me back east for a few days to be a part of their wedding day.

I wish Matt and Gretchen many happy years together and a safe trip to Las Vegas. I hope they win big! Other than a little heat and humidity it was a perfect day.

My day started by meeting up with Gretchen and the other women at a salon to get their hair done.

Our 6th anniversary

Six years ago today, June 1 2002, Victoria and I were married. Both of us had no jobs so our budget was nonexistent. We had a small ceremony at Grace Fellowship Church in Mansfield, OH with a cake reception. Our families helped out as much as they could, which we are very grateful for. If I could do it all over again I would only change one thing, I would hire a professional photographer.

We do have pictures from our wedding day. They were mostly taken by family and friends. But none of them match the quality you could get from a professional. I know that it is ironic that I didn't have a professional photographer at my wedding and now I am one. We still have our memories from that day and a 4x6 album with photos taken by family and friends. I cannot stress enough how important it is to hire a professional photographer.

To celebrate our anniversary we went to one of our favorite restaurants, The Melting Pot in Pasadena, CA.

I always get the same salad every time I get dinner at The Melting Pot. I love the California Salad.

After dinner we went for a little walk around Pasadena. The light was amazing so I stopped and grabbed this shot of Victoria at 20 weeks.

This is a shot of our wedding bands. I remember the day we got them at Zales. We got the least expensive ones we could get because of our budget. We got them engraved and put the bill on a Zales credit card. We had always planned to get new bands one day, but we never have. Since getting married we have been so blessed. We keep these bands because it help us remember how little we had but we were able to survive and be happy with just each other.

On Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing My and Rithy's wedding. I had a great time observing and capturing their family traditions. I am so thankful they invited me to photograph their special day.

Big Sunday

While I was walking back from breakfast at WPPI in Las Vegas I got an email from my good friend Jeannie Mai looking for volunteers to help out with Big Sunday. The event Jeannie was recruiting for was called A Day of Beauty. In her email Jeannie said they needed photographers to document the event and take portraits. I signed up knowing that I could put my skills to good use.

A Day of Beauty makes homeless women feel like a queen for a day using professional hair stylist, makeup artist, and a new wardrobe. After all of that the women get a picture taken of themselves and are given a print so they can see how beautiful they are.

So this past Sunday my wife, Victoria, and I show up at The Good Shepherd Center to serve some amazing women. When we arrived we checked in and were told we could use an office as a room for shooting. I was asked to bring a backdrop to do the portraits so I brought my a collapsible black/white background, light stands and my 580ex flashes to set up a portable studio. The Good Shepherd Center has a beautiful little courtyard with amazing light that wasn't being used that day. I asked if I could set up in the courtyard and not use a backdrop. I was told to do whatever I thought would produce the best portraits. It wasn't hard to make my decision. My wife and I were given a Epson 4x6 printer to print the portraits for the women and Ikea frames to put them in. While Victoria tested out the printer I scoped out the courtyard.

Here is a test image that I shot of my wife so we could test the light and the printer. The 4x6 we printed is on my desk in my office. You know it is going to be a good day when this is the first thing out of your camera.

Star Sargenti and Paul Redmond also donated their photography skills to document the day. It was blast to work with them to bring joy to some amazing women. Here are just some of the portraits of the women from Sunday. All were shot with my Canon 5D and my 85mm f/1.2L lens at f/2.2 in manual mode with some inspiration from Becker.

Margery and I had a great time talking about photography. She used to photograph with a Hasselblad and was very interested in my digital camera. She told me also about the horrors of skid row and her painting and other art she like to pursue.

Michelle usually doesn't like how she looks in pictures and was amazed that this was the first one we took. We took a few more but we nailed on the first shot. I think maybe she was more relaxed since I said let me take a shot to test the lighting, which was true statement. I am glad that I was spot on with the exposure on this test shot.

Victoria and I feel like you could see Pamela walking down the streets of Washington, DC while working in some high political role.

WOW!

The best for last. I took this last portrait of Patricia before packing up. Patricia has a little trouble getting around so they were going to have me take her portrait inside under florescent lighting. I asked Patricia if she could make it about 20 feet so we could get to better lighting such as under the overhang of the building. She said she could make it all the way to the courtyard with my help. Of course I said I would help. We went out and she took a seat on the bench. I then did my thing and packed up and got my car to load it up while Victoria made a print. When I got back I saw a crowd surrounding Patricia. My wife said Patricia started crying as soon as she got the print and then she asked for a copy her sister. We printed off 3 more so she would have extra. This topped off my day.

And finally a group shot of some of the volunteers. This is only a handful of the people that made this day possible.

I am so thankful I could use my talents to bless others and make them feel special. You can count me in for next year!

Hope in the City, Part 1

On Saturday I had a chance do a fashion shoot for the outfits that will be featured at the Hope in the City Fashion Show this coming Thursday in Downtown LA. This weekend we had an old friend come to visit us. My buddy Phil from Bel Air, MD came to enjoy some great meals, conversations, and fun. Phil and his family own one of my favorite places to eat back in MD, C.R. Wings which is located in Bel Air. Even though I can't visit C.R. Wings as often as I would like anymore, Phil was nice enough to bring some of his special wing sauce and a couple other tips so Victoria and I can enjoy some great wings in Los Angeles.

On Saturday we headed to the Griddle Cafe on Sunset Blvd for a yummy breakfast to start the day. After that we headed over to The Getty to enjoy the view, weather, and some art. Here are some pictures I took while we were at The Getty.

I was just checking out the site for one of my favorite places to eat back on the east coast and I noticed something was different when I clicked on locations. The map, as seen below, now has CA colored red indicating that there is a location in California.

I clicked on California hoping that it wouldn't be that far away. I was surprised and excited when the location came up as:

Catching Up

Sorry it has been several weeks since I have last posted. The past couple of weeks have been crazy with a trip to the east coast, a late night drive back from Vegas, finding a new place to live one week before we were scheduled to move, packing, and unpacking.

My trip back east at the begining of March was great. I had a great time catching up with friends and family and photographing Matt & Gretchen. I also spent 2 days photographing the NFL Ed Block Courage Awards while in Baltimore. Many of the images I shot are already being used on NFL team websites and in publications. Since many of the images I shot are licenced by the NFL, I have to wait to get my images approved before posting.

After getting back to Baltimore I only had a few days before heading off to Vegas for WPPI. I had a great time at WPPI even though my trip was cut very short. I got in late Saturday night to catch the Fast Track Photographer Workshop with Dane Sanders on Sunday. I had a great time at the workshop and had a chance to meet several great photographers. Monday was the first day of WPPI. I had a great time checking out the tradeshow and catching Yervant and Jesh De Rox during their platform presentations. Sadly I had to head home late Monday night due to a company breaking a written and verbal agreement. On Monday night after the Yervant presentation I got a call letting us know that the new apartment we were planning to move into was given to someone else. The fusterating part is that we had a written and verbal agreement and a date to pick up the keys. So after talking to my wife, Victoria, I decieded to drive home and look for a new place to live with only a little over a week before our scheduled move. I left Las Vegas at 11:00 pm for a 4.5 hour drive home.

So now it is April and we are nearly all unpacked. The move to our new place went smothly and we had an amazing group of friend and family give us a hand. Time Waner cable did not show up when we had made an appointment so I went nearly a week without internet. I am now connected again and catching up on my work. I am thankful that my clients have been very patient and understanding.

At the place we just moved out of, we lived on the first floor and had a pool view. The pool closed at 10pm but on several occasions people would break the rules at all hours of the night (1am, 4am, 6am) and wake us up. We are now in a new complex on the top floor. Here is the view we get from our balcony. I know the picture is small and the view isn't outstanding but I really like it. Make sure you check out the notes below the image.

Matt & Gretchen - Engagement

Last Saturday I went to Philadelphia to photograph Matt & Gretchen's engagement session. Matt and I met while I was working at Lockheed Martin as an engineer. We immediately hit it off since we are both Eagles fans. I had such a great time hanging out with Matt & Gretchen and look forward to coming back to Philly in May to shoot their wedding. Hopefully since it poured during their engagement session they will have sunny skies for their wedding day.

We met at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to start the session. The only problem was that nearly the whole museum was covered with scaffolding since it was being renovated and the weather was rainy as well. I still managed to get off a few shots using creative angles so you didn't see the construction while keeping Matt & Gretchen dry. Here is my favorite from this location.

While we headed off to Penn's Landing for our next location the skies started to clear. As soon as we parked and got out of the car the skies clouded back up and opened with an amazing downpour. Gretchen and I quickly jumped in the car. Matt was a little behind us and got pretty wet. I thought for a moment we wouldn't get their engagement session in but less than 5 minutes later the rain stopped, the skies cleared, and the sun came out. Here are my favorite shots from Penn's Landing.

With only about 30 minutes before the scheduled sunset we headed off to Temple University to grab a few shots. As we made the drive over to Temple the skies started to get cloudy again. By the time we got to the bell tower at Temple the skies in front of us looked very menecing. I managed to get off only a few shots before you could hear this loud rumble from the distance. We quickly ran for cover and made our way back to the car. Matt even ran out ahead to grab the car and pick Gretchen and I back up. Here is one of the shots I got in the 1 minute (literally) that I shot at Temple.

I just want to thank Matt and Gretchen again for choosing me to be a part of their special day. I know we are going to have a blast on their wedding day. Here is one final image of Gretchen. She is going to be a beautiful bride. I can hardly wait for their wedding day.

Themes so far this year

So far this year each month has had a separate distinct theme.

January - A month of being sick. I started off the year with a trip to Ohio for Jon & Alison's wedding. After I got back I spent the next several weeks sick. I didn't feel back to normal until the last days of the month.

February - A month of visitors. The first visitor we had was my wife's best friend April who came towards the beginning of the month and stay for a long weekend. We had a great time going out on a whale watching trip out of Long Beach and doing other fun things. The second visitor was one of my best friends, Richie. Richie and I have been friends since middle school when we worked in the computer lab together. Richie stayed for a week and we had a great time visiting the filming locations for E.T., Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Back to the Future, and other movies. It was a great month and I hope we have more visitors soon.

March - A month of travel. March is just starting out but the theme is pretty clear. I am currently writing this blog post as I sit at LAX waiting for my flight to Baltimore. I am heading back to Baltimore to visit friends and family, shoot an engagement session, and donate my time and skills for a great charity. I come back on the 12th only to head back out of town again on the 15th for WPPI in Las Vegas. Make sure you check back for images from my travels.

Yesterday I promised to tell you why I was sorry I didn't have my camera in hand the whole day when we were visiting the Central Coast. While my wife, Victoria, and I were scouting a location to photograph the sunset, we saw a team from The Marine Mammal Center of California headed down the bluffs to the shore. We followed and saw what they were after: a stranded Elephant Seal pup. They carefully loaded the 100+ pound baby into a crate, and then asked for my help to get it back up the cliff. Afterwards, they asked us to help think up an unusual name for it because they track thier rescues by name (not number) but cannot reuse a name for ten years. My wife suggested "Rustin". The folks from TMMC were kind enough to take a picture of us with Rustin and sent us an update on his condition later that evening. Here are the other pictures from Saturday. I took these earlier in the day when we stopped on the beach in San Simeon, CA to see the Elephant Seals. I wish I could have gotten a better angle and had better light but I am pleased with the results. All of these images were taken with my Canon 40D and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens with the Canon EF 1.4x II Extender attached.

First outing with the 5D

Since I don't have any weddings or engagements to shoot until next month, I took out my Canon 5D for a test run this past weekend. My wife, Victoria, and I drove up the coast of CA to San Simeon to see the baby elephant seals. After seeing the seals we started driving back down the coast towards home and stopped just north of Cayucos to watch the sunset. We arrived with a little over an hour to go before sunset so we went for a walk to scout out a good location to photograph the sunset. I will tell you more about that walk tomorrow and why I made a big mistake by not bringing my camera.

Here are some images with my 5D. All were shot using my new Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens except for the last one which was taken with my Canon 15mm f/2.8 fisheye. Enjoy!

New Toys

I finally picked up a Canon 5D body last week after contemplating the purchase for nearly a year. Canon released the 5D in September 2005. The 5D is equipped with a full frame 12.8 MP sensor. Even though this model has been out for 2.5 years with no replacement, it is still considered on of the top cameras out today due to its low noise and great color representation. I had been hoping Canon would announce the 5D replacement at PMA in Vegas this year but it didn't happen. They could announce it this summer or early fall and I will be curious to see what they do. The main reason I wanted to get a 5D is so I could really appreciate the shallow depth of field the 85mm f/1.2L II can deliver on a full frame body. I also enjoy getting the full fisheye effect using my 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens now.

I also picked up 2 new Canon L lenses for my 5D. I got the 24-70mm f/2.8L and the 17-40mm f/4.0L. Make sure you check back later today of tomorrow for my first outing with my new camera and lenses.

Thirst Relief Mentor Auction

Today was an awesome day! This afternoon I found out I was the top bidder for a mentoring session with Dane Sanders in the WPPI Thirst Relief Mentor Auction. Thirst Relief's mission is to provide pure drinking water to those in need across the world. We take it for granted that we can turn on our faucet and get clean drinking water in our own home. Many of us don't even use that option but instead go out and buy bottles of water. A donation of $5 to Thirst Relief can save a life by protecting them from water borne illnesses. Please consider contributing to this great cause. I was able to save 101 lives today with my donation. I am so thankful for Dane and many other leaders in the Wedding and Portrait Photography industry for giving their time and knowledge in exchange for our donations.

I am out in Las Vegas at PMA08. I drove out this morning from LA and will be heading back tomorrow. On my trip out I listened to Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life by Steve Martin. The book was excellent especially since it was read by Steve Martin himself. He has starred in two of my favorite films, The Jerk, and Planes, Train, and Automobiles and happens to be one of my favorite actors. I would love to meet him one day.

After dinner and the season premiere of Lost I went out with my Canon 40D and my 85mm f/1.2L II lens and purposely took photographs totally out of focus. The reason I wanted to take photos that weren't in focus is because this lens has a circular aperture so you get a really cool effect when photographing lights, which Las Vegas is full of. Here is one of my favorite images from tonight.

This week has not been one bit fun. I must have picked up a bug or something when I was in Ohio. Monday I wasn't feeling 100% but by Tuesday I was miserable. I think I am finally starting to get better. Hopefully I will sleep through the night tonight. My wife, Victoria, has been amazing in taking care of me. Temescal Canyon Hike

This past Saturday I went on a hike with some friends at Temescal Canyon. The hike took about 2 hours and had some steep inclines. We left about 9:30 am and reached the summit around 10:30am or so. I think I will try this hike again with plans to reach the top around 4:00pm, so I can have better light for photos. Here is a self portrait I took when we reached the top.

Last night I started my cross country drive to our new home in CA. My dad joined me on the trip to keep me company and to hopefully relive some great memories from roadtrips past. My wife, Victoria, is flying out Saturday with my mom and the pets. I am so thankful for my parents giving us a hand with this move.

The weather was beautiful and after the ceremony we made a few pit stops on the way to the reception at Top of the Town which had an amazing view. I was able to capture so many amazing images. Yesterday afternoon I had the opportunity to second shoot Will and Lindsay's wedding with Joe Kurtz, who is an amazing photographer and a great guy. The ceremony and the reception took place at The Cloisters. Here are some of my favorite images.

I had a great time at my first WPPI. I met so many amazing people, learnd a ton, and got my hands on the new Canon EOS ID Mark III. I am planning on going to WPPI again next year and hopefully for many years to come. Here are two shots from my trip both with my new Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye.

I am in Las Vegas currently at Wedding and Portrait Photographers International. I am having a great time meeting other photographers in the industry and learning new skills. I stopped by the Shootsac booth and got the chance to meet [b]ecker for the first time and chat about some of our common interests.
